Epidemiological and Structural Findings Supporting the Fibromatous Origin of Dorsal Knuckle PadsFrom the Hand Surgery Unit, and Institutue of General Pathology, University of Modena, Italy Correspondence: Prof. I. Pasquali Ronchetti, Inst. of General Pathology, via Campi, 287, 41100–Modena, Italy. Epidemiological, optical and electron microscopical findings suggest that dorsal knuckle pads and Dupuytrens disease are fibrosing disorders with common features. In all cases examined, knuckle pads were always associated with Dupuytrens contracture and, in a significant number of cases, with bilateral Dupuytrens contracture. In a statistically significant number of patients with knuckle pads, Ledderhoses and Peyronies diseases were also present (P<0.001). Optical and electron microscopical studies showed that cell types and extracellular matrix were identical in knuckle pads and Dupuytrens nodules in different patients.
