The Detection of Feigned Hand Weakness Using the Five Position Grip Strength TestFrom the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics, Queens Medical Centre, University Hospital, Nottingham, UK Correspondence: Mr M. W. Tredgett, Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics, Queens Medical Centre, University Hospital, Nottingham, UK. E-mail: mtredgett{at}msm.com This study assessed the sensitivity and specificity of the five-position grip strength test (5PGST) for detecting feigned hand weakness in healthy volunteers. The 5PGST reliably detected feigned hand weakness in only 15% of cases. Thirty-three per cent of volunteers demonstrated an entirely normal pattern of grip strength when feigning weakness.
