Rhys-Davies Exsanguinator: Pressure Characteristics and Technique for Improving PerformanceFrom the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool, UK Correspondence: Mr Chris Harris, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University Hospital Aintree, Lower Lane, Liverpool L9 7AL, UK. E-mail: christian.harris{at}tesco.net This paper reports the results of an investigation into the pressure exerted by the Rhys-Davies exsanguinator on the palm and dorsum of the hand. We hypothesised that, due to the shape of the hand, the palm is shielded from the full effect of the exsanguinator, but our study showed that it is compressed as well as the dorsum. However, placing a bag of fluid in the patients palm significantly increased the pressure applied to the palm.
